The companies that built the physical economy were designed around the technology and the working habits of their time. Knowledge in a few heads. Pricing in one person’s judgement. Software chosen a decade ago that never talked to anything else. That was a reasonable way to build a company. It is no longer a competitive one.
The way people work changed. The way buyers decide changed. What software can do changed completely. The physical economy now has to operate inside a digital one: bigger customers ask for documentation, traceability, provable lead times, and the ability to plug into their systems, and AI has moved what a supplier is expected to handle on its own. A company can do excellent work and still not clear the bar to be considered.
This is not a warning about being replaced. It is the opposite. The operators who get their systems right over the next few years are the ones who will take the work.
