WHY THE ORDER MATTERS
A vendor installs a model over an ERP nobody trusts, a spreadsheet only one person maintains, and job records that are entered three days late. It answers every question instantly, and it is wrong often enough that people stop asking. Nobody says the pilot failed. It just goes unused.

Intelligence is only as good as the record underneath it. If a person has to reconstruct what happened on a job by calling three people, an AI cannot do it either. It will simply be faster and more certain about being wrong.

This is not an argument against AI. It is the reason TMI builds the layers underneath it first. An intelligence layer installed on a company that cannot see itself is an expensive way to guess.
THE THREE PREREQUISITES
Every one of these has to hold before the intelligence layer is worth paying for. They are also worth doing on their own, which is why the readiness work pays for itself whether or not any AI ever gets built.
What is happening right now. Jobs, crews, equipment, orders, capacity — visible without asking anyone. If the answer to “where does that job stand” is a phone call, there is nothing for an intelligence layer to read.
What happened, and why. Who quoted it, what was promised, what changed, what it cost, where the exception was handled. A model cannot explain a pattern in a history that was never recorded.
The connected structure the work moves through — quoting, scheduling, dispatch, job cost, inventory, service, billing — with one source of truth rather than eleven versions of it. This is the substrate. Without it there is nothing to build on.
Then, and only then, the fourth layer becomes worth installing.
Decision support, exception alerts, forecasting, knowledge retrieval, digital employees. The layer that makes the company answer questions about itself — because by now the answers are actually in there.

Once the record is current and connected, the same technology stops being a demo and starts being useful. Reporting that assembles itself. Alerts on the exceptions that matter rather than all of them. Knowledge retrieval that returns what your best estimator would have said, because that is what it was built from.
Digital employees carrying repeatable work — follow-up, scheduling support, document handling, collections outreach — with human approval gates on anything that touches a customer or a commitment. People keep the judgment. The system carries the repetition.
We will not sell you an intelligence layer your company cannot carry. If the readiness work is the whole job, we will tell you that and stop there.
THE HONEST VERSION
A company can engage TMI and never receive an AI system. Plenty of the highest-value work is process, connection, and getting what one person knows into somewhere the rest of the company can reach. The goal was never more technology. It is a business that can answer questions about itself, and keep running when the person who knows everything is on a plane.
You do not have to commit to a company-wide AI layer to find out whether AI is worth anything to you. Most companies start with one workflow.
