TMI / COMPARISONS
AI AUDIT
VS BUSINESS SYSTEMS AUDIT.
Short answer. An AI audit asks which tasks a model could take on. A business systems audit asks what is constraining the company, which is frequently not a task at all. If you already know the constraint and want to know whether AI addresses it, the first is enough. If you do not, the second finds it and the first assumes it.
WHAT EACH ONE
ACTUALLY IS.
AI AUDIT
An AI audit surveys the work a company does and identifies where language models, automation or agentic systems could take over or accelerate it. Done well it produces a ranked list of candidate use cases, an estimate of the effort for each, and an honest view of which ones the company's data can currently support.
It is genuinely useful when a company has already decided to invest in AI and needs to know where to point it.
BUSINESS SYSTEMS AUDIT
A business systems audit looks at how the company actually runs — how work enters, where information is carried by a person rather than a system, what the records can and cannot answer, who the company cannot operate without — and identifies what is limiting it.
Automation is one of the answers it can return. So are a missing integration, a pricing problem, a knowledge transfer risk, or a process that is fine and should be left alone.

/BUSINESS SYSTEMS AUDIT
WHEN…
CHOOSE AI AUDIT
- The company has already committed to AI investment and needs it aimed
- There is a specific process somebody wants assessed for automation
- The data situation is already understood and in reasonable shape
- Leadership wants a quick view of the art of the possible
CHOOSE BUSINESS SYSTEMS AUDIT
- Nobody can say with confidence what the actual constraint is
- The same information is being re-entered in several places
- The numbers needed for a decision take a day and three phone calls
- The owner is still the system
- An earlier technology purchase did not change anything
Neither column is a sales argument. Both appear on this page because both are correct somewhere, and a comparison in which one side never wins is an advertisement.
HOW TO DECIDE
THREE QUESTIONS
THAT SETTLE IT.
- 01
Can you name your constraint in one sentence, with evidence?
If yes, an AI audit scoped to it may be all you need. If no, that question is the whole value of a systems audit. - 02
Would the audit still be useful if the answer turned out to be no AI at all?
An audit that can only conclude in favour of the thing the firm sells is not an audit. This is the single most useful test to apply to whoever you are speaking to, TMI included. - 03
Can your records currently support what the findings would recommend?
If they cannot, both audits will return the same first step, and it will not be an AI project.
TMI sells the second one, and says so. The Intelligent Company Audit is a business systems audit with an automation and data lens built into it, scored across ten areas. It is allowed to conclude that AI is not the answer, and frequently does.
